Winter Olympics


This was brand new this year--a winter counterpart to my Summer Olympics! The kids were really into it, especially since it coincided with the Olympics in Sochi. 

Supplies needed:
  • icons to represent 8-10 of the events featured in the Winter Olympics. I used these:
    • Curling
    • Ski Jumping
    • Speed Skating
    • Cross-Country Skiing
    • Figure Skating
    • Biathalon
    • Ice Hockey
    • Bobsledding
    • (I would definitely add 1-2 more next time--I used up every event in Junior Primary!)
  • list of 8-10 songs (one for each event)
  • a pink poster with a picture of a girl
  • a blue poster with a picture of a boy
  • tape/pins to hang the icons on your board
Set up:
  1. Pin/tape your icons onto the board--easy as that! 
  2. Have your boy/girl posters accessible.
Game play:
  1. Announce that the Primary Winter Olympics are now in session!
      • describe each event they will be participating in (the actual event, not what they're going to be doing in Primary)
  2. Have a child come up and pick an icon. Name the event ("Ooh, speed skating!"), and then describe how the Primary will "compete" in this event. Here's what I did for each of my events:
      • Curling = Do As I'm Doing (p. 276), "sweeper" actions
          • you'll almost certainly have to explain curling and the sweepers, so make sure you know what you're talking about!
      • Ski Jumping = sing the entire song with a crescendo. Start off very quietly and end fortissimo (like a jumper preparing to jump and then launching).
          • I also had the kids crouch down low as we began singing, then slowly stand up and ended in a "ski jump" position when we hit fortissimo.
      • Speed Skating = sing the song as fast as possible
      • Cross-Country Skiing = sing all verses (make sure your song has more than one!)
      • Figure Skating = boys/girls sing (this is where the posters come in)
          • explain that this is pairs figure skating, where a man & woman skate together, but not always doing the same thing at the same time. For our Olympics, the boys and girls will be singing the same song, but not always at the same time.
          • hold up the boy sign for the boys to sing, girl for girls, or both together
      • Biathalon = do two things at once! Sing a song plus do some other action.
          • For Junior I had them jump up and down on one foot while singing
          • For Senior I had them pat their head and rub their belly while singing
      • Ice Hockey = sing staccato (like the puck shooting around the ice)
      • Bobsledding = either you or one of the children is the bobsled captain.
          • explain that the in bobsledding the team members must all lean the same direction in order to build speed and/or keep the sled from tipping.
          • the "captain" stands in front of the Primary and leans to either side (or stands up straight) and the Primary must mimic their actions while singing. 
  3. Sing the song for that event, then move on to the next event! Hopefully your Primary will love this as much as mine does.

Around the World


This one is inspired by the song "Children All Over the World" (p. 16), which was one of my favorite Primary songs as a kid.

I like this one because it works well for both Junior and Senior (with a few adjustments for Senior!).

Supplies needed:
  • large map of the world
  • small slips of paper with 8-10 ways to say "thank you" in different languages
      • be sure to include the six languages specifically mentioned in "Children All Over the World" (p. 16): "Gracias", "Malo", "Wir danken dir", "Tak", "Merci", "Kansha shimasu"
        • Here are the ones I've used:
          • Gracias (Spanish)
          • Malo (Tongan)
          • Wir danken dir (German)--they usually just say "Danke", so I put that on the slip, too.
          • Tak (Danish)
          • Merci (French)
          • Kansha shimasu (Japanese)
          • Dank U (Dutch)
          • Asante (Swahili)
          • Obrigado (Portuguese)
          • Spasiba (Russian)
  • list of 8-10 songs you want to sing (one for each language)
      • I also add in "Children All Over the World" (p. 16) at the end (for Senior at least)
  • for Senior Primary: clues to help them figure out which country each language is spoken in.  Obviously most languages are spoken in multiple countries, so take your pick! Here are the ones I've used in the past:
      • Gracias (Spanish) = PERU
        • -Nearly half of this country is covered by the Amazon jungle
        • -It has a range of huge mountains called the Andes running through it
        • -Three famous cities: Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lima
      • Malo (Tongan) = TONGA
        • -Consists of 170 islands, 48 are inhabited
        • -guns, gambling, and going shirtless are all illegal
        • -name comes from ‘Tongahahake’, means ‘the wind that blows from the SE’

          • I also sang them the "Asante sana, squashed banana" song from Lion King when they got stuck on this one. Not sure how much it helped!

  • tape/pins for the map and language slips
Set up:
  1. Hang up your map
  2. Have the language slips on a table or in a bag for the kids to pick from
      • I reinforced my slips by taping them to construction paper. If you're planning on doing this activity multiple times over the years (and using the same languages), this might be a good idea.
  3. Have your list of clues ready for Senior Primary
  4. Have tape/pins ready to put the languages on the correct place on your map
Game play:
  1. Have a child come up and pick a language slip.
      • JUNIOR: Pronounce the word and have the Primary repeat it.
        • tell them what language it is
        • tell them the countr(ies) where it's spoken and a fact or two about the countr(ies).
        • put the language slip in the right place on the map and sing the corresponding song
      • SENIOR: Pronounce the word and have the Primary repeat it.
        • DON'T tell them what language it is--instead, read them the clues.
          • If the clues aren't enough, tell them the language. If that's not enough, start giving them geographical clues ("It's in Asia, near China", etc.)
        • put the language slip in the right place on the map and sing the corresponding song
  2. Try to leave yourself 5 minutes at the end to teach the Primary "Children All Over the World" (p. 16). I don't usually try with Junior, but I always do with Senior!

Synonyms


Another Senior only game--they need to have a good grasp on language in order to make this one work! I usually pair this one with Missing Halves for Junior. 

Supplies needed:
  • list of 8-10 songs you want to sing
  • synonym "titles" for each of the songs on your list, written/printed on small slips of paper. Here are some I've used in the past:
      • When I Am Immersed (I Enjoy Searching For Color Spectrums) = When I Am Baptized (I like to look for rainbows) p. 103
      • Cherish Your Fellow Men = Love One Another (p. 136)
      • A Little One's Supplication = A Child's Prayer (p. 12)

Set up:
  1. Put your slips in your bag/container. That's it!
Game play:
  1. Explain to the children how to play. 
      • This is usually best done through an example, so use one of the examples above that you DON'T have in your plans that day.
  2. Have a child draw a slip and read it to the Primary.
      • Usually after they read it once, I read it again for clarity. 
        • If necessary, use some definitions as hints ("What is a seer? Oh, like a PROPHET?") 
  3. Once they've guessed correctly, sing the song, then play again!

Mad Gab


I love the game Mad Gab and had seen some versions others had made for their singing times. I borrowed a few titles from them and then had a great time with my husband coming up with some of our own!

This is definitely a Senior only game! 

Supplies needed:
  • list of 8-10 songs you want to sing
  • small slips of paper with the Mad Gab titles for each song written/printed on them. Here are ones we've used over the years:
      • Poppy Core Paw Pink = Popcorn Popping (p. 242)

Game play:
  1. Explain to the children how to play Mad Gab. 
      • This is usually best done through an example, so use one of the examples above that you DON'T have in your plans that day.
        • read them the Mad Gab title and see if they can guess what it really says. Repeat it several times, accenting different parts of the sentence. 
        • Usually you'll have a child or two catch on pretty quickly. If not, repeat the sentence with almost the correct pronunciation/accent until they can "hear" what you're really saying
  2. Have a child draw a slip and read it to the Primary.
      • Usually after they read it once, I read it again for clarity. 
        • I'll also repeat it several times with different parts accented until someone "gets" it.
  3. Sing the song, then do it again!

Summer Olympics


I got a bit of inspiration from the 2012 Summer Olympics and came up with this activity. The kids LOVED it! (I also have a Winter Olympics). 

Supplies needed:
  • icons to represent 8-10 of the events featured in the Summer Olympics. I used these:
      • 100 Meter Dash
      • Javelin Throw
      • Table Tennis
      • Marathon
      • Archery
      • Rowing
      • Gymnastics
      • Hurdles
      • High Jump
      • Diving
  • list of 8-10 songs (one for each event)
  • tape/pins to hang the icons on your board
  • optional: picture of a crescendo sign and decrescendo sign to help the kids visualize how they're supposed to sing
Set up:
  1. Pin/tape your icons onto the board--easy as that! 
      • have the crescendo/decrescendo signs ready if using
Game play:

  1. Announce that the Primary Summer Olympics are now in session!
      • describe each event they will be participating in (the actual event, not what they're going to be doing in Primary)
  2. Have a child come up and pick an icon. Name the event ("Ooh, the hurdles!"), and then describe how the Primary will "compete" in this event. Here's what I did for each of my events:
      • 100 Meter Dash = sing allegro/as fast as possible
      • Javelin Throw = sing legato (nice & smooth, like the arc of a javelin through the air)
      • Table Tennis = sing staccato (like the ball bouncing back & forth)
      • Marathon = sing ALL VERSES of this song (make sure your song has more than one!)
      • Archery = Do As I'm Doing (p. 276), archery actions
      • Rowing = alternate which side of the room sings (like alternating which side rows). You can either direct this yourself or let the child do it.
      • Gymnastics = Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes (p. 275). Make them end with arms in the air like they've just completed a gymnastics routine!
      • Hurdles = at the end of each phrase of the song, jump (like you're hurdling)!
      • High Jump = sing the entire song with a crescendo. Start off very quietly and end as loud as possible (like the high jumper starting in low and jumping as high as he can)
      • Diving = sing the entire song with a decrescendo. Start off as loud as you can and slowly fade out (like the diver starting up on the high dive and diving toward the water)
  3. Sing the song for that event, then move on to the next event! Hopefully your Primary will love this as much as mine does. 

Independence Day Matching


A fairly standard matching game using Independence Day symbols and facts!

I do two versions of this--one with simple picture matching for Junior and one with fact matching for Senior.

Supplies needed:
  • For Junior: 8-10 pairs of Independence Day/USA themed pictures (Uncle Sam, flag, etc.)
  • For Senior: 8-10 sets of matching facts. These are the ones I use:
      • Statue of Liberty = Gift from France
      • July 4th, 1776 = Adoption of the Declaration of Independence
      • Inalienable Rights = Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness
      • National Motto = In God We Trust
      • Sewed the First American Flag = Betsy Ross
      • Paul Revere = One if by land, Two if by sea
      • Star Spangled Banner = Francis Scott Key
      • "This land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no kings upon the land" = 2 Nephi 10:11
      • First National Capitol = Philadelphia
  • corresponding number of squares of thick paper (to cover each of the pictures/facts)
  • marker to label each paper square (1-20 or however many you have--makes it easier for the kids to pick which two they want to try to match)
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per pair)
  • tape/pins to hang the pictures and covers
Set up:
  1. Pin/tape your pictures/facts onto the board in nice, even columns and rows. Make sure to mix them up to make matches harder to find!
  2. Cover each picture/fact with a square of paper, making sure the squares are in numerical order.
Game play:

  1. Very simple--invite children to pick two squares, continuing to call on new children until a match is made. Once a match is made, sing the song and continue.
    1. I always give the child the option to "ask the Primary" if there is a known match on the board and the child is unsure of where it is. 

Pioneer Day


I like to pull this one out on whatever Sunday happens to be closest to July 24th. It tends to be a crazy singing time, but the kids LOVE it!

I chose only four of the pioneer songs in the Songbook since the kids in my Primary aren't at all familiar with the songs. If you feel like your Primary could do more/different songs, go for it! But this activity is specifically designed for the songs I chose. 

Supplies needed:
  • 4 pictures to hang on the board:
    • people pulling a handcart (The Handcart Song p.220)
    • oxen pulling a wagon (The Oxcart p. 219)
    • pioneer children walking (Pioneer Children Sang As They Walked p. 214)
    • pioneer family (To Be A Pioneer p. 218)
  • wagon (large enough for a child to ride in)
  • Items needed for The Handcart Song
    • wagon
    • poster of the Salt Lake Temple
  • Items needed for The Oxcart
    • wagon
    • two pictures of an ox with string attached (so they can be worn around a child's neck)
  • Items needed for Pioneer Children Sang As They Walked 
    • bar of soap (keep it wrapped in paper, otherwise the kids like to pick at the soap)
    • toy hammer
    • small wooden toy (something a pioneer child would have played with)
    • scriptures
  • Items needed for To Be A Pioneer
    • wagon
    • a sign with "1,000 Miles" printed on it with a string attached (so it can be worn around a neck)
    • toy sword
    • packet of seeds
    • toy hammer
Set up:
  1. Obviously this singing time is heavy on the props. Try as best you can to separate your props into piles for each song (the wagon and the toy hammer will be used in multiple songs).
  2. Pin the four song pictures up on your board
  3. Try not to leave the wagon somewhere the kids can get to it easily. Otherwise you'll be pulling kids out of the wagon before Primary even starts.
Game play:
  1. Talk to the kids about Pioneer Day and why we celebrate it on July 24th. Then explain that we're going to be learning some songs about pioneers.
  2. Have a child come up and pick one of the pictures on the board. Sing the song using the following props and actions (I also sing each song at least twice to help the kids feel more familiar with it):
      1. The Handcart Song (p. 220)
        • you'll need SEVEN children to help with this one
          • "When pioneers moved to the West"--have a child point West
          • "With courage strong they met the test"--have a child flex his muscles
          • "They pushed their handcart all day long/And as they pushed they sang this song"--have a child push gently on the back of the wagon each time the word "push" is sung
          • "For some must push"--same as above, have child gently push on wagon
          • "and some must pull"--have another child at the front of the wagon gently pull when the word "pull" is sung
          • "As we go marching up the hill"--have a child march in place
          • "So merrily on our way we go"--have a child give their biggest smile
          • "Until we reach the Valley-o"--have child hold picture of Salt Lake Temple
        • have the Primary do the actions along with the children up front
      2. The Oxcart (p. 219)
        • you'll need THREE children to help with this one
          • Give two of the children the ox pictures to wear around their necks. The third child will ride in the wagon.
          • Have the two "oxen" GENTLY and SLOWLY pull the wagon around the Primary room as you sing
        • have the Primary march slowly in place while they sing
      3. Pioneer Children Sang As They Walked (p. 214)
        • you'll need SEVEN children to help with this one
          • "Pioneer children sang as they walked and walked and walked"--have a child walk in place to the beat. He will repeat this action EVERY time the phrase "walked and walked" is sung (3 times in the song).
          • "They washed in streams"--give a child the bar of soap and have them pretend to wash themselves with it
          • "And worked"--give a child the toy hammer and have them pretend to hammer something
          • "And played"--give a child the small toy and have them play with it
          • "Sundays they camped"--have a child make a tent/teepee shape with their arms over their head
          • "And read"--have a child hold open the scriptures
          • "And prayed"--have a child fold his arms and bow his head
          • "Week after week..."--back to your walking child!
        • have the Primary do the actions along with the children up front
      4. To Be A Pioneer (p. 218)
        • you'll need EIGHT children to help (including a pair of siblings/cousins, if possible)
          • "You don't have to push a handcart"--have a child gently push the wagon
          • "Leave your family dear"--have two children (siblings/cousins would be best) hug each other and pretend to be sad
          • "Or walk a thousand miles or more to be a pioneer"--hang the "1,000 Miles" sign around a child's neck and have him walk in place
          • "You do have to have great courage"--give a (very responsible) child the toy sword and have them hold it up triumphantly
          • "Faith to conquer fear"--give a child the packet of seeds and explain that "faith is like a little seed"
          • "And work with might"--give a child the toy hammer and have them pretend to hammer something
          • "For a cause that's right/To be a pioneer"--have a child point to the audience's right (their left)
        • have the Primary do the actions along with the children up front
  3. This is a crazy, fun activity, so make sure you give yourself a bit of time at the end to bring things to a nice, calm ending. Be sure to share your testimony of the importance of the pioneers (both those who walked the plains and their modern counterparts). 

Musical Dice


This one is a lot of fun and a great way to reinforce music theory that you've taught the children! Just a warning--you MUST have a confident accompanist in order to do this activity. If your Primary pianist is struggling or uncomfortable, this one will probably stress them out.

Supplies needed:
  • 6 sets of opposing musical terms. I use the following:
    • forte vs. piano
    • Treble Clef (girls) vs. Bass Clef (boys)
    • a cappella vs. accompanied
    • staccato vs. legato
    • Adagio vs. Allegro
    • stand up vs. sit down
  • pictures to represent each of the 12 terms above, printed very large (1 per 8 x 11 piece of paper)
  • 12 pieces of thick construction paper 
    • I like to have a pink piece to glue the Treble Clef on and blue for Bass Clef (helps the kids remember which one is which)
  • marker
  • one die, preferably in some small container to avoid die-tossing across the Primary room
  • list of 8-10 songs you want to sing
Set up:
  1. Glue your pictures to your construction paper
      1. Don't forget to use pink for Treble Clef and blue for Bass Clef
  2. Arrange the papers into their sets (forte and piano together, etc.) You should have 6 piles.
  3. Label the back of each paper in the set, giving each a number from 1-6 to correspond with the numbers on the die. For example:
      1. forte vs. piano (write '1' on the back of both of these)
      2. Treble Clef (girls) vs. Bass Clef (boys) (write '2' on the back of both of these)
      3. a cappella vs. accompanied (write '3' on the back of both of these, etc.)
      4. staccato vs. legato
      5. Adagio vs. Allegro
      6. stand up vs. sit down
  4. Place sets on the table or floor in numerical order
  5. Have your die (in container) ready
Game play:
  1. Before beginning, give the kids a quick review/introduction to all the terms on the pieces of paper. I usually just hold up each set and remind them of what "staccato" means, etc.
  2. Choose a child to come roll the die. The number they roll indicates which set they get to use.
  3. You can either hold the set yourself or let the child hold them (one in each hand).
      1. Whichever picture is held up high is the one the kids have to follow. So if the child is holding "staccato" in one hand and "legato" in the other, he should pick one to hold up high--that's how the Primary knows how to sing.
      2. Alternate between the pictures, lifting them up and down at intervals so the Primary has to keep switching back and forth between "staccato" and "legato" or "Adagio" and "Allegro."
  4. Sing the songs in the order. 
  5. Two things you may want to keep tabs on:
      1. If you're letting the kids hold the pictures, make it clear that they can't just continuously swap back and forth the entire time. That ruins the fun! If you have to take over mid-song, do it!
      2. Make sure your pianist is comfortable with the songs you've chosen and is capable of following the directions. This one will even keep your pianist on his toes!

Temples Around the World


I LOVE this activity and it never gets boring since you can always swap out temples!

Supplies needed:
  • 8-10 pictures of temples around the world (I have more because I just can't help myself!)
  • heavy construction paper
  • glue
  • map of the world
  • masking tape
  • Sharpie marker
  • yarn
  • tape
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per temple)
  • tape/pins to hang up map & temples
Set up:
  1. Glue each temple picture onto a piece of construction paper (for extra strength)
  2. Using the Sharpie and masking tape, write the location of each temple and paste it on the correct place on your map (look at the picture above if you need help).
      1. This can get complicated if you have several temples in close proximity to each other. Try to spread them out across the entire map!
  3. Before Primary starts, pin/tape up your map on your board.
  4. String time! Tape a piece of string with one end starting at the masking-taped locations on the map and the other end hanging off the map (this is where the kids will put the picture of the temple that corresponds to that location). (See the picture above for detail).
      1. Make sure you don't have any strings crossing! I like to tape all my strings to the map first so I can arrange the positions without any cross-overs.
  5. You can either hang your temple pictures around the room or have them laid out on a table. 
Game play:
  1. Have a child pick a picture of a temple and bring it to the map.
      1. For Junior Primary I immediately tell them where it goes and throw in a fact or two about that temple/country.
      2. For Senior Primary I have a list of hints to help them identify the correct location (language spoken, famous people, famous landmarks, etc.)
  2. Attach it to the correct spot on the map and sing the song!
  3. End with your testimony about temple work and how awesome it is to see temples appearing all over the earth!

Dispersed Titles


A fun one I found while searching for ideas! This one is a Senior only game (unless you happen to have a very advanced Junior Primary where all the kids are able to read). 

Supplies needed:
  • list of 7-9 songs you want to sing
  • blank white notecards (and lots of them)
  • markers
Set up:
  1. Using your list of songs, write each word of each title on a separate notecard. For example, if you were singing "Called to Serve", you would end up with three notecards: called, to, serve. 
      1. I like to use all different colors to mix things up, but you could color coordinate titles if you wanted to give the kids a bit of a hint.
      2. Another fun hint--try to pick at least one song that has a single word title, like "Faith" or "Baptism". Makes it more of a challenge. 
Game play:
  1. At the beginning of singing time, disperse your notecards through the Primary. 
      1. Try to make sure each child has at least one card, if possible. 
  2. Tell the Primary that each of them have a single word from a title of a Primary song they know. Have them raise their hands if they think they know what song their notecard belongs to.
  3. Pick a child and have them announce their guess. If they are correct, that child and all the others who have notecards that match that title come to the front and put themselves in the correct order. For example: if the child with "temple" guesses "I Love to See the Temple" correctly, the children with "I", "love", "to", "see", and "the" should join him up front. 
      1. You're likely to get multiple "the"s, "to"s, "and"s, etc. Just pick the first one and send the others down until the next title. 
  4. Sing the song, then collect all the cards and start again.

Three In A Row


I found this idea while searching for singing time plans and it was a big hit!

Supplies needed:
  • list of 8-10 songs you want to sing
  • one piece of paper with a group of three words for each of your songs
  • small bag/box 
Set up:
  1. From each of your songs, pick three words in a row from the lyrics to use as a clue. For example: "I'm going there" from "I Love to See the Temple".
      1. Depending on the song/phrase, I'll pick easier ones for Junior and harder for Senior.
  2. Write or print out each of your three-word phrases and cut into individual strips.
  3. Place strips in a bag/box for the kids to draw from.
Game play:
  1. Have a child choose a strip from your bag/box, then see if they can guess the song. Ask the Primary for help if needed.
      1. If they are really struggling, add one word at a time to the beginning or end of your three-word phrase. 

Missing Halves


Another one that's just for Junior (to pair with a game that's just for Senior--I usually pair this one with Synonyms for Senior).

Supplies needed:
  • 8-10 large pictures (I raid old 'Friend' magazines)
  • thick construction paper (to mount the pictures on for added strength)
  • scissors
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per picture--I like to try to make the pictures match the songs, like singing 'Nephi's Courage' for the picture on the right above)
  • tape/pins to hang pictures on the board and around the room
Set up:
  1. Glue/tape each picture to a piece of construction paper.
  2. Cut each picture in two (make it fun--some squiggly cuts, some in different directions)
  3. Put one half of each picture on the board and hang the other half somewhere in the Primary room.
Game play:
  1. Tell the kids you need help finding the other half of your pictures.
  2. Have a child find one of the halves in the room and bring it to the board to make a match.
  3. Sing the song.

Numbers Game


This was a fun way to help the kids understand the numbers involved in the Church (specifically the leap from ward to stake to members). And a great way to bring up missionary work since the numbers continue to increase every year!

This one is for Senior only since Junior Primary doesn't really have a good number sense yet. I usually pair this one with Build a Snowman for Junior. 

(Yes, we really did have 146 Primary kids that year. I am not kidding about our large Primary). 

Supplies needed:
  • 8 pieces of paper with the following labels:
    • Primary Kids in Our Ward
    • Members of Our Ward
    • Wards in the Church
    • Stakes in the Church
    • Members of the Church
    • Missionaries Serving
    • Operating Temples
    • Presidents of the Church
  • 8 pieces of paper with the numbers that correspond to the categories above
    • Good contacts for ward numbers: Primary President, ward membership clerk, Bishop
    • Search lds.org for the most up-to-date numbers for the other categories. They're always announced in the April session of General Conference (although they're a year old by that point).
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per category)
    • I like to try to match my songs with the categories: missionary songs for missionaries, I Love To See the Temple for temples, etc. 
  • tape/pins to hang the papers
Set up:
  1. On your board, pin or tape up each category label, making sure to leave enough room for the children to place the numbers next to/underneath it.
  2. Have the numbers either face up (easier) or face down (more of a challenge) on a table.
Game play:
  1. Explain that the object of the game is to correctly match the numbers with the categories on your board. Also a good time to explain the relationship between wards and stakes.
  2. Have a child pick a number and choose which category it belongs to. 
    1. You have some discretion here: you can either guide the child to make the correct choice, or you can let them put the number wherever they want, with the understanding that the next child(ren) have the option to move numbers around if they feel it's justified.
      1. If you do decide to let them choose for themselves, make sure the songs on your list are linked to the NUMBER, not the CATEGORY. Otherwise it gets confusing about which song you should sing. You'll always sing the song attached to the number the child picked up at the beginning. (This can be a good hint--if they place their number under "Missionaries Serving" and the song is "I Love to See the Temple", most of the Primary will catch on pretty quickly and will make the correct change the next turn). 
  3. Make sure to end with your testimony of missionary work and how even Primary children can help make these numbers grow bigger every year. 

Build a Snowman


A simple activity I only do with Junior Primary on a week when Senior is playing a more complicated game (I usually pair this one with the Numbers Game for Senior). 

Supplies needed:
  • snowman pieces pictured above 
    • hat
    • head with eyes and mouth drawn on
    • torso
    • bottom
    • 2 arms
    • 2 buttons
    • carrot nose
    • scarf
  • marker/pen
  • list of ten songs you want to sing (one song per piece)
  • tape
Set up:
  1. Write a number on the back of each piece. This number will correspond to the song number you want to sing from your list.
  2. Have some tape ready to put on the back of the pieces.
Game play:
  1. Explain to the children that you are trying to build a snowman and need their help.
  2. Have a child pick a piece to put up on the board, then sing the song. 
    1. You can try to guide/force them to build the body first, but I never do. Our last snowman was a great masterpiece with everything attached to a floating snowman head.

Noah's Ark Matching


A fairly standard matching game centered around the idea of Noah bringing the animals two by two into the ark.

Supplies needed:
  • 8-10 pairs of animal pictures (I did one female, one male of each)
  • corresponding number of squares of thick paper (to cover each of the pictures)
  • marker to label each paper square (1-20 or however many you have--makes it easier for the kids to pick which two they want to try to match)
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per pair)
  • tape/pins to hang the pictures and covers
Set up:
  1. Pin/tape your animals onto the board in nice, even columns and rows. Make sure to mix them up to make matches harder to find!
  2. Cover each animal with a square of paper, making sure the squares are in numerical order.
Game play:
  1. Very simple--invite children to pick two squares, continuing to call on new children until a match is made. Once a match is made, sing the song and continue.
    1. I always give the child the option to "ask the Primary" if there is a known match on the board and the child is unsure of where it is. 

Missionaries From Our Ward


 This activity involves quite a bit of prep work, but was a lot of fun for the entire ward! I had a lot of people stop by the Primary room after church to see these posters.

Supplies needed:
  • 1 map of the world (I also had a US map since we had a lot of missionaries who served in the US)
  • information about current & former missionaries serving from your ward
    • depending on your ward you could choose to limit this to only those somehow involved in Primary (parents, teachers, etc.) or you could try to find out everyone possible.
  • small icons for each elder/sister (I drew my own, but you could probably find one somewhere)
  • envelopes (if you have more than 7-8 missionaries), marker to label envelopes
  • tape
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per envelope/missionary)
Set up:
  1. Label each icon with the name and mission of that missionary (for example: "Sister Smith, Baltimore Maryland").
  2. Depending on your numbers, place groups of missionaries in envelopes together. If you only have 7-8 missionaries, skip this step and just pick a song for each missionary.
      1. Try to get your missionaries into 7-8 groups so you can have a song for each group. 
        1. Depending on your numbers you may end up with some missionaries in groups and some not in groups. Whatever it takes to get 7-8 groups/missionaries.
          1. We had a lot of missionaries and ended up grouping by continent, as well as splitting the US and having a separate group for Central America. 
      2. Label each envelope with a number so you know which song it corresponds to.
  3. Have tape pieces rolled and ready to stick the missionaries to the maps. 
  4. If you only have a few missionaries, hang them around the room where the children can find them.
    1. If you have a bunch of envelopes, put them on a table so the children can pick from them
      1. If you have some combination of missionaries/envelopes, do whatever you think would work best for your Primary!
Game play:
  1. Have a child choose an envelope or missionary. 
  2. BEFORE they put the missionary on the map, have them read the missionary's name(s) and the name(s) of their mission(s). Also announce the song.
  3. Have the Primary begin singing while the child puts the missionar(ies) on the map.
      1. If you have an envelope with a lot of missionaries, have two children come up and help each other put them on the map.
      2. For Junior Primary I had their teacher come up and help them.
  4. If you feel inclined, you can turn it into a race (try to get the missionaries on the map before the Primary finishes singing the song). 
  5. Make sure to end with your testimony about missionary work and how you hope you'll one day be able to add their names to the map!

Valentine's Conversation Hearts


This is a nice easy activity that the kids still love!

Supplies needed:
  • 8-10 paper hearts of varying sizes
  • marker/pen
  • list of songs you want to sing (one song per heart)
  • tape/pins to hang hearts around the room
Set up:
  1. On each heart, write a phrase similar to one you'd find on a piece of conversation heart candy.  I tried to match my phrase to the song, but you could just use generic phrases.  Here are the ones I've used over the years:

  2. For an extra challenge for Senior Primary, I make them answer a question before I reveal the song. Here are some of the questions I've asked:

      3. What would be the perfect Valentine's gift for you?
      4. Read John 13:34, then guess the song (corresponds to 'Love One Another')
      5. Fill in the blank (use lyrics or song titles)
      6. Tell us how to say 'I love you' in another language.
      7. Fill in the blank: ________ is the pure love of Christ (Moroni 7:47)
      8. Tell us one reason why you love your dad.
      9. Tell us one reason why you love your mom.
      10. Tell us your favorite Primary song (corresponds to 'child's choice').
Game play:
  1. Very simple--Hang the hearts around the Primary room, then have a child pick a heart. Sing the corresponding song (or have them answer a question first if you decide to do that option).
